Market areas in general equilibrium

چکیده
This paper proposes a spatial model with realistic geography where continuous distribution of agents (e.g., farmers) engages in economic interactions one location from finite set cities). The structure the equilibrium consists tessellation, i.e., partition space into collection mutually exclusive market areas. After proving existence unique equilibrium, we characterize how borders and, case mobile labor, inhabited cities change response to shocks. To deal two-dimensional space, draw on tools computational geometry and theory shape optimization. Finally, provide an empirical application illustrate usefulness framework for applied work.

Dynamic Labor Market in a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Model: Case Study of Iranian Economy
The labor market, as one of the four markets, plays an important role in economic growth and development. So review developments in the labor market because of its close relationship with developments in other sectors is of great importance. This study tries to examine the dynamics of the labor market by adjusting for a New Keynesian dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model for the Iranian ...
متن کاملSunk Costs, Market Structure And Welfare: A General Equilibrium Interpretation
This paper develops a general equilibrium model with the purpose of identifying fundamental determinants of market structure and their welfare impact. The main effects are derived from the interaction between horizontal and vertical differentiation, induced by different sets of exogenous and endogenous sunk costs. The former are found to be positively correlated with market concentration and ma...
متن کاملStabilizing the Economy: Market Design and General Equilibrium
We employ laboratory methods to study stability of competitive equilibrium in Scarf’s economy (International Economic Review, 1960). Tatonnement theory predicts that prices are globally unstable for this economy, i.e. unless prices start at the competitive equilibrium they oscillate without converging. Anderson et al. (Journal of Economic Theory, 2004) report that in laboratory double auction m...
متن کاملGeneral Equilibrium Effects of Land Market Restrictions on Labor Market: Evidence from Wages in Sri Lanka
Taking advantage of a historical quasi-experiment in Sri Lanka, this paper provides evidence on the effects of land market restrictions on equilibrium wage and its spatial pattern. For identification, we exploit the effects of historical malaria prevalence on the incidence of land restrictions through the availability of ‘crown land’. The results show that there is important spatial heterogenei...
متن کاملIncentives and the Stock Market in General Equilibrium XII ISER Workshop on General Equilibrium: Problems, Prospects and Alternatives
The objective of general equilibrium theory is to understand how the complex structure of contractual markets, characteristic of a modern economy, provides a mechanism for agents (consumers, firms and government) to coordinate their decisions, share their risks and create appropriate incentives, in an evolving intertemporal setting with uncertainty. The basic skeleton on which the theory is con...
